The British International School - Secondary School
The BIS serves students aged 12 to 18 (Years 7 to 13). Students are split into Key Stages; Key Stage 3 students (Years 7 to 9) follow an adapted English National Curriculum, Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11) follow the two-year Cambridge IGCSE curricula and Key Stage 5 (Years 12 & 13) follow the IB Diploma Programme. Our campus is on the outskirts of Istanbul in a forested area within sight of the Black Sea.
The secondary school day consists of seven 45 minute periods divided into three, two and two periods by a morning break and by lunch. Students have a form tutor with whom they spend the first 10 minutes of every day. We have a two week repeating schedule of classes; students move from room to room for lessons given by specialist teachers. We have a wide range of lunch-time and after school activities. In addition we have extensive support for students who need to improve their English language skills and for students that have additional learning needs.
Despite being a non-selective school, The British International School consistently has IGCSE and IBDP results that exceed the worldwide average. Our former students report that they are very well prepared for transitioning into other schools and for University life compared to their peers from other schools. Amongst other things, we attribute this to;
Small class sizes - a maximum of 15 and often considerably less in iGCSE and IBDP classes. Our staff to student ratio is better than 1 to 6
Experienced staff - well qualified and experienced teachers from around the world
Broad British International Curriculum - all curriculum areas are strongly represented within the curriculum; we have a strong creative arts and sports programme.
A friendly, caring environment that promotes inclusion and wellbeing
